Zócalo College Prep is intentionally designed as a continuous 6–12 learning community. Middle school serves as an academic and developmental accelerator, while high school provides structured, interest-based pathways that connect learning to life beyond graduation. Across all grade levels, the model is grounded in strong instruction, authentic work, character development, and deep partnerships with families and community mentors.
Design Element 1: Middle School as an Academic Accelerator
Middle school at Zócalo College Prep is designed to accelerate learning rather than serve as a holding period. Students build the academic skills, habits, and mindsets required for success in rigorous high school coursework and beyond.
• Develop strong foundational academic skills, productive learning habits, and a college-going identity
• Engage in project-based learning as culminating summative assessments
• Participate in exploratory electives across multiple disciplines to help students identify interests and imagine future possibilities
• Receive foundational Spanish literacy instruction to build early language skills and prepare for advanced biliteracy opportunities
Design Element 2: Five College and Career Pathways
In high school, students engage in one of five college and career pathways aligned to their interests and long-term goals. Pathways connect academic learning to real-world application while maintaining a strong college-preparatory core.
• Access industry certifications, internships, and applied learning experiences
• Participate in authentic project-based learning connected to community and professional contexts
• Engage in biliteracy and dual language opportunities
• Earn early college credit to accelerate postsecondary readiness
Pathways are not tracking mechanisms; all students remain on a college-preparatory trajectory while applying their learning in different, meaningful ways.
Design Element 3: Character, Identity, Equity and College Mindset
Character development, identity, and a college-ready mindset are embedded into daily practice and reinforced through consistent structures and reflection.
• Embedded in daily routines, expectations, and classroom culture
• Ongoing goal setting and reflection tied to academic and personal growth
• Students design a personalized pathway aligned to their strengths and aspirations
• Regular practice of leadership, responsibility, collaboration, and voice
